So we're going to talk about uh the film May Day that just came out on Apple TV. And this was this was something I was going to talk about at the beginning of an episode that we were going to do, but didn't. We were going to do in full transparency, we're going to do a review on 9 to 5 because legendary Dolly Parton had passed away. And then it just time got away from us and it just didn't feel as as timely or relevant.

Yeah. The uh studios are still in under construction. So it's so funny because you can't let's see. If you can see behind me the Oh Brother Funko pops way in the background on the on-air sign. For those that are watching. Yeah, I see them. And just setting those up. Now, this is a funny story. So one of them, my hair piece fell off, much like in real life. And so that was that was you know cracking up uh my uh my girlfriend. Yeah. Yeah. And then your, as as we've talked about on the podcast before, your huge cranium, again, mirroring real life, you like lean forward. I was trying to like do something with your vertebrae to get you to lean back. So then she came up with an ingenious idea and put a little circle of putty on the back of your head. So you can't tell, but your like head is stuck to the wall back.

Well, speaking of falling down, so you know, we one of the things that we talk about a lot on the podcast, and it's kind of relevant because today would be our parents' wedding anniversary, as well as my best friend growing up, Randy. So shout out to Randy and his wife Jen. They're celebrating their anniversary.

This was I didn't know that it was the same day.

This was also mom and dad's anniversary, which when I did the best man toast at his wedding, mom and dad were there. And so I sort of through tied the two together. Makes sense. Yeah, which without overshadowing, you know, their special day, of course. But uh uh, and it was the best, best man speech of all time, just for the record. But so it's funny, he and I were texting the other day, just you know, hey, well, how's it going? What's happening? You know, checking in with each other. And I said something about like his wife just had a birthday, says, Oh, happy, belated. He goes, Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. She uh yeah, Jen was by uh strove by your house the other day and uh saw your mom out mowing the lawn. And little did he little did he know, right, right, this conversation that we've been having on and off about mom who's in uh next month will turn 91 years old, yeah, and she's still out doing these kind of things. And it's this balance of you know, supporting that because she, you know, it keeps her vibrant, it keeps her spry and all of this stuff. But it's also balancing that with near-death experiences, like tripping over a stump in the front yard. And then what what made me laugh, Mike, was you saying the neighbors must think I'm like this cruel son. So when he said that, I thought Jen was probably like, oh my god, he's out there making her mow the lawn. What a terrible human being.

And she must have gotten seen her early because I did go out. Now I have trouble with my feet, awful pain every step. Just in general, but I'm damned if I'm gonna let my 91-year-old mother cut the lawn, but she'll she sneaks it out out of the garage.

Yeah. No, no, no. You would have been in California. You were probably in law school or something. Probably. Many, many years ago now. But anyway, so Mike, but talking about May Day, which now this speaking of San Diego, uh, where you lived for many years in with the law school, we were uh out there for Comic-Con, of course, and May Day was one of the films that we uh we I can't keep forgetting.

You were in that I was not in that was the one I missed, and you showed me the trailer that night.

Yeah, it was directors on directing, I think was this this particular panel by Collider.

But there was something funny at the opening of the film that you must have noticed, right?

Well, yeah, I did. I I'll probably get there in a sec. Yeah, I think I think we're on the same page there. John Francis Daly and and Jonathan Goldstein, writers, directors here on this film, uh, they've done, I guess, maybe most uh their biggest maybe Spider-Man Homecoming, would you say? That's gotta be probably up there with the biggest part of the resume. I know that I think it was did Jonathan yeah, Jonathan Goldstein, I think wrote and directed Game Night, which is a pretty funny movie with Jason Bateman. And I didn't realize Sean Francis Daly was an actor, really, is how he came up. And I guess he has a cameo in this, which I don't think I processed while I was watching the film, but this was a straight to Apple release, the A24 production along with Sky.

Yeah. Was that planned? Because I thought when you went to, you know, you told me about it at Comic Con. I thought it was getting a theatrical release.

And maybe I was under that impression at the time. I think I was, but so but it was it, you know, it was nice to see uh something that, you know, because we we have Apple, of course, so it it didn't cost us, you know, having to go out to the theater. This just came out a couple of days ago as of this recording. Um maximum effort is behind it as well, which is of course Ryan Reynolds' production company, you know, Deadpool of reference there. And stars Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Brana. And when I saw the trailer, it was cool. I was like pretty excited by it and it looked fun. You know, it had very much had a lot of like misery vibes. If you think of the movie Misery, Stephen King. Who directed misery? Actually, it wasn't Stephen King, was it?

No, who directed Misery? I have to look that up now. I should know that. But and and so, anyways, it's set in 1987. Ryan Reynolds is a Navy pilot, this top gun type pilot who gets shot down behind enemy lines. Nothing like we've heard that storyline before. And he gets rescued by an ex-KGB agent, which is played by Kenneth Branagh.

Who looks very different. I mean with the beard and everything. Yeah, if you didn't tell me it was him or if I didn't see his name come up, I wouldn't have guessed it.

Yeah, he did look quite different.

Oh, Rob Reiner, the late great Rob Reiner. Of course, I was gonna say Rob Reiner, of course, but I I thought, no, I'm I'm gonna say that, it's gonna be wrong.

Yeah, no, I liked right off the bat that this was set in 1987. I just anything in the 80s, I'm a sucker for that. So and they leaned into that quite heavily with this whole, you know, Kenneth Brana's character has this obsession with the film Top Gun. In fact, one of the the jokes, the running jokes, is he's got this bootleg VHS recording of the film. One of these where some guy goes into the theater and records it on an old camcorder, you know. Right. We've seen it.

You see somebody get up and walk in front of it, or somebody puts their feet up on the chair.

Yeah, that's right. Now, when we were in San Diego, we went down to the harbor and you know, we're looking at the Navy ships and everything. And so there's a sequence where they're in the gas lamp quarter, right?

At night, at night.

And so And they walk, you know, San Diego. I love this about the city. It has all these arches. Like when you go to a a place called uh Hillcrest, there's a big hill crest arch. Same thing, you know, gas lamp quarter. And I uh it's just there's something about it, it's really like a feel you get.

It was cool. Now, I don't know, they filmed this in Budapest and in Canada, where of course Ryan Reynolds hails from. And so I don't know that must have just been movie magic, you know, re-creating gas lamp.

I was look, you know, at that point, there's four sailors, and I I am not looking at them. I'm not paying to what I'm just looking all around to see if I notice any dive bar or something I would recognize because well that's kind of what I was yeah, that's what I was looking for too.

You know, you you mentioned good circling back to your comment about, you know, did you think this was intentional that it was going straight to Apple or it was going to be in the theater? What I found interesting is that this was announced back in 2023 and they wrapped filming in May of 2024. So why so long, Mike, to get this put out?

Probably they couldn't get funding to put it in the theater.

And do you think they were maybe debate just waiting and then finally made the decision, well, let's just release it on Apple.

Yeah, I think that's what happened, is they were pr probably trying to find a distributor. And they just, you know, and went two years and like, hey, we gotta either put this out or, you know, do something with it.

It's like, it's like we we still can't believe there's actually a catwoman filmed finished movie that they couldn't get it distributed, so they just axed it. You mean Batgirl?

Batgirl. Yeah. Catwoman, Batgirl, same thing. Right.

With with Keaton in it, with Michael Keaton as Batwick.

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, that's a shame.

We yeah, let's uh let's get a hashtag going, release Batgirl. Hashtag release Batgirl. So what what are your let's talk about the film a little bit here, Mike. What were your impressions of it? What'd you think of it?

SPEAKER_01 11:47

Well, this is again similar to the last time we did a straight to streaming. It starts off pretty good. I yeah, like you said, we we've seen heard the story before. Behind enemy lines is literally a movie with Owen Wilson.

The original, yeah. It's really good, actually. That would not lean, that was very dramatic.

This wasn't Gene Hackman in it, right? Hmm. I think he was. I think so.

SPEAKER_00 12:14

He was like the commander. I think so.

So it starts out with this great effect. You know, he's flying, you know, he gets this mission to take satellite photos over Russia. And it's the Cold War 1987. So we kind of had this deal, don't do that. But we did it anyways, you know. Right. And what happens is he winds up getting put on this mission to take these photos. He thinks he's gonna fly. Turns out another guy is flying, he's like the co-pilot, which I found out. I don't know if you knew this, but that particular ship which looked really like space age, you know, some real plane.

The plane, yeah.

Real plane, but you can't control it from that backseat. So that was kind of a hiccup, but you know, I didn't know that when I watched it.

But so he hits the ground, you know, he's about to shoot at somebody, he kind of passes out. And then the movie takes a kind of switch into a Ryan Reynolds comic. You know, that that same old Deadpool, you know, comedy.

And that just didn't work for me.

SPEAKER_00 13:40

Didn't work for you, yeah. It does. Well, it it's I don't think it's intended to be serious, but you're right. I but but that's a fair point, though, because it almost is setting it up in that way in the beginning, right? So you're right. And then once we once we come out of that, you know, he comes to, basically.

He comes to, and like you said, Kenneth Branagh had brought him to his house.

And it's very tied up. And it's very misery-like at that point, right? Kathy Bates and the whole thing, and he's yeah, yeah, you couldn't you couldn't escape that. I agree with that.

That's the first time that mates you told me that comment, San Diego. You said it's got a misery vibe.

SPEAKER_00 14:18

Yes.

SPEAKER_01 14:19

And you said it earlier, and I'm like, I don't get the misery vibe. And now I finally get it.

Okay, you get it now. Like as of this recording, not as much as a lot of people. As of this recording. Yeah. It's yeah, I I agree with you.

It it it it it did feel very like I think they should have leaned one way or the other. Instead of action comedy, or it kind of turned into almost a buddy movie.

It did, and and it it felt in some ways a little too familiar to like I didn't see you know, it it it could have easily been a Deadpool film. Just slapped the Deadpool suit on him, and a lot of that kind of action too. There was some very cool like direction in some of the shots they got. It was very, you know, very creative and and so forth, and a lot of CGI and different things they're using here. But uh so you know, there's some neat shots. And and some of it, you know, some of the things made me laugh. I mean, it it wasn't all bad, but I but I agree with you. I think it felt very familiar in terms of of Ryan Reynolds' comedy.

There wasn't a lot new there.

I thought this would have been a good chance for him to kind of play more drama and show his acting chops, which we know he has.

Well, you know that's an interesting point. And you know, Mike, I think there was an opportunity for that, right? Because there's this other storyline, which is quite heavy, where his father, who worked on the Navy ship, something we can relate to, actually, correct.

We love two uncles.

Yeah, and this whole thing of the asbestos on the ships, which led to uh uh mesothemioma. Yeah, huge number of cases of cancer. And so Ryan Reynolds' father, Harold Kelly, is the character, played by the great David Morris, wonderful character actor.

You know who I always confuse him with is William Peterson.

They are doppelgangers, too. Oh yeah, okay, yeah. Yeah, he's he plays his dad, and they could have leaned more dramatic with that storyline, but they really didn't. In fact, David Morris isn't in it all that much. No. And and so I think moments that were honestly probably intended to play a bit more dramatic didn't because so much of the rest of it was comedic.

And and you know, making Kenneth Branagh, the John Wick of the film.

Very much so, yeah.

He's got all these because he's a former KGB agent. Sure. So he's got all these, you know, ways to, you know, fight and whatnot.

It was very Yeah, very John Wick. It was very John Wick. Very John Wick. And there were times where it like the beard served him well because you could tell it was a stunt double, and they were doing some like you know, put projecting the face onto the actor or something and the stunt person.

I also thought some of the stunts were way too familiar, like when the car drives and then flips on its side. Yeah, you know. There was a lot of that.

There was a lot of that. There was a lot of those like on the train sequence, and there's a big fight. And I I I do feel like we've seen all of that before. Yeah. Yeah. So but done better. And and done better, perhaps, sure. And it's, you know, it's it's it's one of those where I think it's a good decision ultimately for whatever the reasons, that it ended up just going to streaming. I don't think this would have lasted two weeks in the theater, to be honest, even with two of the you know, huge A-listers carrying this film for sure. And it was it, it was, it was neat to see them paired up. I don't think they've ever worked together before. I don't think so. Here's an interesting something I saw I thought was very interesting was as we said, it was set in 1987, and there was this other running gag where Kenneth Branagh has uh the Bruce Springsteen Born in the USA cassette tape, and he's playing it throughout the film. I've never, first of all, I've never heard downbound train in a film before. I've never, you know, and and legendarily, if that if that's a word, Springsteen has never uh Springsteen's never really allowed his music to be very select.

Right, you know in later years he has he certainly loosened up, but he's you know what did they play?

SPEAKER_00 18:54

Like I'm on fire, like people know. And remember, he sold his catalog not that far back. Right. And so this is probably why you're seeing more of this now. And it wasn't that it was done in poor taste or anything, it was actually it was actually quite cool. Right. But uh, but that was a funny joke because at one point they're getting ready to, you know, it was like planes trays on automobiles as well, right? And so they're in this car and they're getting ready, and Kenneth Brana's character is like, Well, I've got, you know, got the cassette tape. Got the cassette tape. Brian Reynolds is like, oh boy, 12 whole hours, you know, of the same cassette over and over. But so I I I agree with you. I think it's we've seen all this before. Now, it's an enjoyable streaming film. You know, if you've got Apple and you're looking for something to do with your partner or whatever, it's enjoyable enough, but it's, you know, it that's about the most I can say for it. I will say that the IMDB Meta score is a 60. That's a little low. I would say it's a little higher than that for me. But what I'm surprised, Mike, Rotten Tomatoes, again, for whatever weight you want to give the those those ratings, the critics on Rotten Tomatoes, 81% and the audience, the audience 67. So they dialed it in more accurately there for you know Yeah, there's just no way it's an 80%. No way. No, no.

And um, you know, it's certainly the probably a film that not a lot of critics bothered with. They're like, oh, straight to probably high flute, and we don't do that.

And it was interesting, again, this whole storyline about the the asbestos causing cancer. And uh, you know, it's a it's a pretty big statement they're trying to make, I think, in the film, but it just comes a little too late. And I think to your point, I could see I could have seen Ryan Reynolds leaning more into the drama at various points throughout. And then there's this whole sequence where Kenneth Branagh is estranged from his daughter and his daughter is gay, which at that time, like literally, especially in Russia. Yeah, totally outlawed. And it come to find out, Kenneth Branna knew knew this all while he's known, but he's like, if she wanted to talk about it, she can come to me and talk about it. And so they they have a somewhat of a little bit of a reunion going on.

Yeah, well, and that's because Ryan Reynolds' character says, Hey, talk to her. Maybe, you know, why don't you have a conversation? So, yeah, like that kind of stuff, I think that's what they should have focused on. And less of the you know, I was thinking we could put Vince Vaughn, him, and Robert Downey Jr. in the same film, and they'd be like the same character. Mm-hmm. Right?

Now Robert Downey Jr., you know, in Endgame, Avengers Endgame, which I'm not sure if you've seen it yet. Oh, yeah. You were you were were talking about watching Theater, yeah. Yeah, he did some great dramatic stuff in that. And I think he should have got nominated. Right. But I think his reputation for being a comic, you know, making a joke of everything.

Yeah, I think this this might have worked better if they had balanced out the comedy with the drama.

Yeah, and less action too. Come, you know, because it seemed like blowing things up just to blow it up.

It was too much. And I don't need that many choreographed fight scenes. We've seen all that before with the creative ways of, you know, you take the pool cue and you stick them in the aorta. Like we've seen all that before, you know, in the jugular, whatever.

Use the magazine to kill three guys.

Right. A towel off the rack and you murder three it just whatever. I don't know. It gets get kind of tired at a certain point. Maria Bakalova is the woman that the actress that plays uh kind of the Brahma's daughter, just to mention. Yeah, there's a there's also a guy, I think his name is Marcy Dovichinsky, who plays this character, Volkov, this guy that's got like, you know, very stereotypical Russian, and he's like he's kind of like the bad guy of the film. Yeah, he's barrel chested and he's the whole thing. You know, he's a pretty funny character. But yeah, it just it's a it's a bit of a swing and a miss, I think, ultimately.

So yeah, I I would not recommend this one. Unless, yeah, if you're totally bored.

Yeah. Again, there were some neat things about it, you know, some of the nostalgia and stuff like that. And it it wasn't that there were not parts that were funny. You know, some of the comedy definitely worked. And uh I'm a fan of both those guys.

They can't all be home runs, you know. Right. Right. So anything else to say about Mayday, Mike?

We almost uh I had to send out a May Day before we came on air because you just could not get I couldn't get my mic working. No, no, we been a little bit delayed with getting, you know, this this next episode out, and you were just like trying plugs and hitting buttons and just nothing was working.

Yeah. And I and I must have kicked the cord out or something. I just didn't. I'm like, what's going on? What's happening? Mike had a DNR on his podcast, Mike. No, no, that's okay, that's just one part of the storyline. Sarah Goldberg from Barry, who played Bill Hader's girlfriend at Barry, is in this, and she plays a psychiatrist that all of the Silicon Valley tech bros go to.

And uh that yeah, I don't want to say more about it than that, but uh and and uh Billy Magnuson is you know one of these tech CEOs, and he's kind of a still sort of an up-and-comer. He's not like the top dog, but he wants to be, right? He's that's what he's after.

And he seems a bit manic so far in the beginning. He's kind of manic. Sure. Very, yeah, absolutely type A, you know, you could other things you might say about him, but uh it's a great, it's a great series, so I'd recommend that. I just started, I'd not seen this, but uh we put on she's a big fan of The Pit with Noah Wiley, and uh this has been out now. The third third season, I think, is coming out. Yeah, it's been it's been renewed or whatever, and that's good. I've watched a couple episodes of that, it's good, but that all that doctors speak, all the medical speak, it gets a little bit dense and it's hard to follow sometimes. But it's good. I I like that so far. It's pretty good. Are you watching anything new on the streamers?

Uh no, I'm you know, I've been re-watching tires. I don't know why, but it's just good. It's so short, you know. It's like a bite-size something I can just watch shortly, and you know, but yeah, that's what's been streamed.

I think also because it's very it's so politically incorrect. Right. You know, and and it's it's it's hard to find that these days. So it's it's it's it's enjoyable, I think, for partly for for those reasons. But um all right, well, there you go. There's a take on May Day, which is currently streaming on Apple. I don't know, it's it's uh a cautionary recommendation, I guess, from the O Brother. If you're really bored, yeah. If you're totally bored, Mike says you must see Mayday. This was a monumental, this was not planned today, but for me to be in this space meant moving what was in the space into another space. Uh it's there's a lot going on. A lot of bad the new studio. I'm in the new studio. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. You can see I've got some of my artwork up on the wall, and yeah, and not some of my artwork up on the wall. It's a bit of a hybrid mix. So this is gonna be uh uh work in the making, but at least I can now, you know, do the show from here and and so we won't have any more disruptions.
