Before we do, Mike, who would have thought, who would have thought just a short many months ago that you would be looking at this kind of a haul. I know. For you did good. Physical media. You know, the as we record this, we're in the midst of the Criterion 50% off sale. Tell folks a little bit about that who may not know.

A History of Violence by Cronenberg film, which I hadn't seen in quite some time. Great film with uh Vigo Mortensen. So I'm looking forward to I have that. And and you know, part of my decision making was like, hmm, okay, future episode. We haven't done this film on the podcast yet. I was like, that was factoring in. And Mike, how could I not finally just go ahead and get seven samurai by Akira Kurosawa? I mean, it's a must. It's a must. It's a must.

Yeah, I looked it up and they were running equals. So I was like, man, I'm just gonna get it while I'm here. Right. And uh there's quite a few people there. It was it was cut pretty, pretty busy there. So a lot of other physical media collectors that were on site. But so yeah, that was, I mean, for the I picked up five, and like you said, it's going on for a while. So going on for a month. So could be a few more in the collection coming. Yeah. But we'll have to add some of these to our Criterion playlist that we've done a handful of Criterion reviews on the podcast before. So but that of course is not why we're here. We're here to talk about Supergirl, which we did a first look on the teaser about three months ago. Then we did another first look on the full trailer that had come out a couple of months ago. And here we are talking about the film. I saw it on opening day, uh, and I think you just saw it today, I believe. No, I I saw it preview night on Thursday. You did end up going Thursday. Yeah.

It's a funny story as I was leaving. There was only about it was four people, a family in the middle, and there was me on one side and this other guy with a notebook on the other side. And as we passed each other on the way out, I get headphones to enhance the audio. He saw me holding the headphones, and he said, I bet those headphones didn't really help.

He I think he was the critic for the the uh Boston Globe. Really? Meaning what we just saw probably wasn't hand was not enhanced by better audio.

I see, I see. So I think you're tipping your your hand here, which A little bit. Well, let's let me let me let me say up front now. We we had w we were we'd been skeptical of this from early on. When we first saw Supergirl appear at the end of Jane Gunn's Superman film, we were yeah, we weren't loving the portrayal in that short sequence at the end of the film. Now we also had said, and and many folks thankfully had come out and educated us on why we were seeing her in that way. Right. Why she was being portrayed that way, because we didn't know her origin story as we do Clark and you know Kellel. And so, you know, it it made more sense to me once we got sort of educated on uh more of her origin story from the comic lore, at least.

Right. And yeah, that's why I jokingly with the like we don't read the comics, so don't hit us with this is accurate to the comic number 862 or whatever the hell. I don't have to. I shouldn't have to see a comic because there is a comic, uh, Supergirl, the world of tomorrow, that this is based on. Woman of tomorrow, I think. Woman of tomorrow. Yeah, yeah. And correct. You know what I mean? I had a running dialogue about halfway through till the end of the film. Should I stay? Should I go? Should I stay?

And I'm gonna go to my the to the to my death arguing in support of the film. Again, I'm not gonna sit here and say this is a spectacular film. It's not. It it has its issues.

It's a story of vengeance between not only her character, but this character, Ruthie, that's played by this young actress.

Continue. Then this girl, for some unknown reason, wants her to be her role model. And a quarter of the way or half the way in the movie, she says, You're good. You're nice. What did we see that suggested there's any good in her, that there's any nice? No, she's she's just angry, bitter. She throws up the first half of the movie more than she does anything else. Yeah.

She throws up. That's totally out of context, first of all. That's not that yes, that that that's a good person. It's a specific plot point you're talking about where she's poisoned and she has to, she's trying to get sick so that she can not succumb to the effects of this poison.

As I said, there's this one bad guy who's ridiculous, okay, who lives in some dystopian kind of universe where she comes to and Krypton gets shot. Okay. So she has three days or three suns or whatever moons, whatever it's called, to get an anecdote for crypto. Okay. That's one story. The other story is this girl who I have no care about. I don't know who she is. I don't know what she is in the comic book lore that looks up to Supergirl, the drunk, and she wants to be like her. And then somehow, with all her baggage at the very end, she says, no, don't kill the bad guy, because that won't revenge won't do it. Even though I've sought my revenge my whole life, don't do that. It w the stories were just all over the place.

You know, they're she's had them since she was a puppy, and you see a little bit about how they came together, but you know, setting that up to where he gets hit with this poison dart, and then, you know, this villain crimp.

And this is twice you've been way off. What what am I off on?

I can certainly continue to do this without you. The I think it was important, I realized as I left there, I thought, you know, to just come out and rail on the film would be easy to do. But, you know, I I think this is I don't know. There's something to be said for, you know, younger.

Because I think we were biased about our our criticisms about James Gunn. And we didn't like Superman. That was clear from our review of Superman. We were both on the same page with that. So I think we went into this, and this is far worse. We went, no, it isn't. We went into this far worse. You know what is far worse than this is Superman. We could have done without Superman in this film at all. He didn't need what what purpose did he serve? Nothing. So I think, and I I just still don't like Corin Sweat's Superman, his portrayal of Superman.

Here's here's some of the things that I I didn't love. I didn't like I didn't care for some of the comedy. I I thought some of it was a little crude. There was a Character, this little, and there were too many alien characters, too. Like I'm not used to that many alien characters, which I get it. They're in they're on different planets. So we we should certainly expect it, but we've not really seen that in Superman.

But this was like every place was the canteen.

It kind of was, and I I didn't love that. It was a little weird for me, but there was one that was, I think, voiced by Seth Rogan, if I'm not mistaken. Yeah. And there was a couple of lines that were just puppet. They were just crude, you know, and uh and I the CGI was it was a little hit and miss for me, although I think her flying honestly was better than what we saw on Superman, because that got a lot of criticism with the way that Corin Swift looks. That's right. But you know, there's a reason for that. What about this this and again, spoiler alert, but this sequence towards the end of the film where there's a kill at the hands of Supergirl, which is something that we've really, as far as I know, we've not seen on screen before. Certainly not in a Superman film, where it's quite ruthless and pretty brutal. I think I was checked out by that point. It was her versus the versus Krem in this sort of showdown sequence. And, you know, the and and and like you said, she's talking the she's she's talking the young girl out of because because again, this guy killed the young girl's parents. That's why she's out for revenge. And then of course, you know, the the the the poisoning of crypto is why Paris is out.

Yeah. No she her performance was not bad. It was not bad. There was nothing wrong with her performance. It was. There's nothing wrong with her performance. Again, you just want to say that to just say the whole thing stunk. And so far you really haven't given many. I I have.

It's to bring those two characters together. It's it's no more complicated than that.

If you're looking for, you know, a fun movie, if this is certainly if this is a character that you're interested in or you've liked from the comics, I mean, for sure.

Absolutely I would. Absolutely I would. In fact, that's what that's a lot of what I've seen. And that's what Yeah, that's why. That's a lot of what I've seen is young girls going to the theater with their parents or their moms or whatever. And it's another reason I was trying to make the point that, you know, you oh, why would it be easier to rail on it? I don't know. I'm not in that camp. It would be easy for me to come on here and sort of take the stance that you thought I would have taken based on what we talked about in the first looks, but that wasn't my experience seeing the film. And I thought, you know, for young girls who are going to the theater for the movie for young girls who are going to this theater to see a role model in a superhero film, why shouldn't they have a character that they can look up to and they can enjoy going to see a film about them? Right? It's like, and and and I think that's that's important to point out.

That's great. That's great. Well, you do that. You do that. You look up to a young animated uh Jesse Cowgirl, and uh the rest of uh you know young girls will look up to supergirls. But to get a better role model. Okay, again, you're you're discounting the whole traumatic origin story of Kara. That's the whole reason. She's like that for a reason. We were both critical of it until you learn more about why she's that way. She's that way because of what happened to her family, to her loved ones, to her planet, to, you know, as opposed to Clark, who, you know, basically grew up in Utopia. You know, he came to Earth as a young kid. He had the exact grew up in Kansas. No, we didn't.

But you can't sit here and argue it unless you say, well, I can argue it from a film standpoint, absolutely.

I I liked the portrayal. I liked what she brought to the character. And and I'm one who said back when The Flash came out and we reviewed that, I like Sasha Cali's portrayal. And I thought she kind of got the short she kind of got the short end of the scene. She was supposed to be in this film. She was supposed to be. She wasn't supposed to be.

The young girl, uh Eve Ridley, who plays Ruthie. Again, you can argue the the purpose and and and the the value of having that character in in this film, you know, whatever, but um I didn't have any issue with her acting in the film. Again, Jason Momoa, you know, I I'm always hit and miss on him anyways. Uh I'm not his biggest fan. Uh he wasn't terrible. It's certainly one of the weaker things in the film for me for sure. Uh again, not knowing that character, I don't know how true his portrayal is to the character from from at least the lore.

And those were and for me, the the the the sequences with him were but some of the weakest sequences. I don't like him as Superman. I I didn't like and when when I see him as Superman, again, it's this goofy, you know, slapstick kind of portrayal. And I'm just gonna be a little bit more than a lot of people. He's a better Superman than she is Supergirl. No, he's not, actually. She's he's not. It's just not it's just not true. Um and again, you didn't like the villain Krem, but I I did. I thought that guy's portrayal was pretty good. He was pretty menacing, he was definitely ruthless. Like, I mean, there was like kids being killed, like that's that's pretty intense stuff to see on on film, especially in a superhero film. But you know, I had no problem with the acting. I didn't think the story was convoluted as you describe it to be. That just wasn't my experience with it. Uh, I thought the emotional beats worked. There was also there was this cool sequence, I forget when it comes into play, but where she's out in space and there's just like everything goes quiet. She just screams into space. And there was there was some good some good sequences. And again, the CGI was hit and miss, but I did like the portrayal of her flying. I thought, you know, in the Superman movie, there was a lot of criticism of that and how that looked on film. And you pointed out it came late in the film, which is fair. Um, you know, we don't really see her suiting up as Supergirl until like the last third of the film. What I didn't know until like the last third, the last 15 minutes. Yeah, maybe the last yeah, it was pretty late. It was pretty late, yeah. Generous. And they were kind of teasing that whole thing about her wearing the costume. And what I didn't know is that some of that fabric that makes up her cape was taken from the fabric that made Christopher Reeve's cape in the original Superman. It's a little tip of the hat. So you can't even you can't ever respect that, which is sad. But what does that do for me? What does that do for me? Whatever. Just whatever. All right, folks, there you go.
